Los Angeles (sometimes Los Angeles) – is widely known as “City of Angeles” (City of Angeles), often abbreviated L.A. Los Angeles is the 2nd city in the US by the number of inhabitants after New York. The population is more than 4 million. The population of the Greater Los Angeles, which extends for almost 500 square miles, exceeds 17.7 people. This urban agglomeration, stretching along the coast of the Pacific Ocean, is the 13th largest population in the world.

Los Angeles is a city of worldwide proportions. The strongest economy is based on international trade, entertainment, manufacturing and tourism. In addition, an important role belongs to the financial and telecommunication sector of the economy, medicine, transport and jurisprudence. Port of Los Angeles is the 5th in the world in terms of congestion, and the economy is 3rd in the USA (after New York and Chicago) and 8th in the whole world. However, it is obvious that Hollywood and the entertainment industry have brought world fame to the city. Formally, Bollywood in Mumbai produces more films than Hollywood, but the scale of the box office is not comparable. In addition to Hollywood, a global filmmaking center, Los Angeles has other media business. The most important of which: the production of television product, computer games and sound recording. All this allows us to justify calling Los Angeles “the world capital of entertainment.”

Los Angeles consists of a variety of areas, spread out over a huge territory (1300 sq. Km). Many of these areas in the past were separate cities absorbed by Greater Los Angeles. In addition, formally independent cities, located near Los Angeles, are considered as part of it. Typically, there are 10 main districts: Downtown, Eastside, Northeastern Los Angeles, South Los Angeles, Port area, Hollywood, Wilshire (west of Downtown), Westside (west), San Fernando Valley, Crescent Valley . In addition to Los Angeles, the largest metropolitan cities: Long Beach, Santa Ana and Anaheim.

Los Angeles is a very interesting city for tourists. Formally, the famous Disneyland is in Anaheim, 40 km southeast of downtown Los Angeles. However, it is customary to talk about Los Angeles Disneyland.

Los Angeles is located in the Pacific ring of fire rings. Moreover, in California along the coast it stretched the San Andreas fault, which means that the city is under constant threat of an earthquake. Serious consequences left behind the earthquake in 1906 (7.8 points, 3,000 dead). The last major earthquake happened in 1994 (6.7 points, 72 dead, 9000 wounded and 20 billion $ loss). Scientists believe that the great earthquake in Los Angeles, it’s only a matter of time.

Currently, Los Angeles is a multinational metropolis. In the 60s of the 20th century, four out of five Los Angeles residents were white non-Hispanic-born. However, since then the situation has changed significantly. At present, the number of whites is 48%, of which 29% are not Hispanic. Other groups: African Americans – 11%, 10.5% – Americans of Asian descent, more than 25% from other races. In general, almost half of the population (47%) is Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Like any metropolis, Los Angeles is experiencing problems with the environment and crime. The police suggests that in the city there are 250 bands with a total number of about 26 thousand people. The most famous gangs are cripples, bloods, Mara (MS13), 18th street (18th street). It’s no coincidence that Los Angeles is spoken of as the “Capital of the American gangs.” However, not everything is so terrible. In recent years, the crime rate has been significantly reduced. In 2009, there were “only” 314 murders, which is a 50-year low and is less than 8 murders per 100 thousand inhabitants. For comparison, in 2006, 1191 murders were committed in Moscow, which is 11.4 per 100,000. The Police Department of Los Angeles (LAPD) and in particular the SWAT special department is one of the most famous and well-established law enforcement agencies around the world, naturally, not without the help of Hollywood.

Much bigger problems the city is experiencing from environmental problems. A huge number of cars on the roads are the main cause of air pollution and the formation of a characteristic smog. A small amount of rainfall only contributes to the fogging of the city. Despite serious attempts to improve the situation, Los Angeles is considered the city with the most polluted atmosphere in the US.

Sunny days in Los Angeles are about 320 per year. Precipitation falls in winter and spring, but on an annual basis there are few and hardly enough to classify the urban climate as a dry subtropical rather than semi-desert. From May to October it is hot, often the temperature is much higher than 30C. From November to April, it is moderately warm, with precipitation, but sometimes the temperature can be briefly below zero. A characteristic feature of the Los Angeles climate is the considerable difference in temperatures (up to 10C) between the shore and the zones remote from the ocean.
